Will an under-sink drawer open all the way?

Check the cabinet entry, installed envelope and full drawer path before buying an under-sink pull-out. Includes a measurement checklist and rejection example.

A pull-out organizer must fit where it sits and everywhere it moves. Check the door opening, the installed frame, the moving basket and the space in front of the cabinet.

“Fits a 30-inch cabinet” is not enough information. The cabinet's nominal size can include its sides and face frame, while doors, hinges and a center stile narrow the passage. Under a sink, the available space can also change with height because of the bowl, pipes and disposal.

Start with the exact installation drawing

Find the model number, minimum cabinet opening, overall installed dimensions, mounting method and required extension space. Rev-A-Shelf's cabinet-size guidance asks for opening width, depth and height and specifically calls out plumbing and hinges as obstructions. Follow the exact product's requirements rather than assuming its basket width equals the opening it needs.

If the manual does not give slide travel or a useful fully open drawing, ask the maker. “Full extension” is not a numerical measurement of how far the front of the basket will project into your kitchen.

Check four zones

  1. The doorway. Open doors to the angle you can actually use, including any limit caused by an adjacent wall or handle. Measure the narrowest passage at the height of the basket, rails and stored contents. A hinge intrusion at one level may not exist at another.
  2. The parked position. Map the frame and mounting hardware from the closed-door limit to the rear obstruction. Check the basin, disposal, valves, supply lines and drain at each occupied height.
  3. The moving path. Trace the basket from fully closed to fully open. Its sides, handles and contents must pass the door, hinge and center stile throughout the movement. A cut-out that clears a pipe when parked may collide as it slides.
  4. The space outside. Measure from the cabinet front toward an island, wall or nearby obstacle. Include the drawer's maximum projection, door swing and the working space you need to stand and remove items.

A rejection example

Illustrative dimensions: a cabinet has a 10-inch opening, but the open door and hinge leave only 8.75 inches at the moving basket's height. A 9-inch-wide basket would be 0.25 inch wider than that passage. Even if the frame fits farther inside, this layout fails the straight pull-out check.

For a separate example, suppose the maker's drawing shows the drawer projecting 17 inches beyond the cabinet front, but an island is 16 inches away. It cannot reach that fully open position. Compare distances from the same reference line; do not substitute closed cabinet depth for drawer projection.

Use a template before installation

Make a lightweight cardboard outline from the verified dimensions. Move it along the intended path without touching or moving plumbing. Add the height of your tallest bottle or bin handle to the check. A flat template can expose a collision, but it cannot prove three-dimensional fit, mounting strength or load capacity.

Check how bins lift out and whether you can still reach shutoff valves. Keep the manufacturer's mounting and service clearances. Do not reposition plumbing, remove a center stile or drill around hidden services just to make an organizer fit.

When a sliding design is a poor match

A narrow removable bin may work better if the doorway is obstructed or the available lane bends around pipes. Check its removal route too. For any mounted option, confirm the supporting surface, fasteners and installation permission; a no-drill label does not remove its support or load requirements.

Record the final measurements in the measuring worksheet. The existing under-sink measuring guide covers the wider cabinet survey; this guide focuses on motion. We have not verified a particular pull-out model for your cabinet and are not making a product-fit recommendation.
