Dish racks for a 12-inch-deep counter

A 12-inch label can mean width, depth, or a tight fit. Compare four rack footprints with room for a margin and a working drain.

InchHarbor editorial research · October 8, 2026 · Manufacturer specifications and original measurement examples. No hands-on product testing.

The short answer: With 12 inches of usable depth and a chosen 0.5-inch margin at the front and back, the rack can use at most 11 inches of depth. Of the four researched models below, the OXO basic rack is a provisional candidate, and the Joseph Joseph Extend Slim is a candidate when rotated. Width, loaded height, support and drainage still decide whether either works.

Measure the strip you can actually use

Measure from the nearest rear obstruction to the front edge that can safely support the rack. A raised backsplash, sink rim or appliance cable can make that less than the countertop's advertised depth. Also measure the width you are willing to give up: a shallow rack can still consume a long section of counter.

Our example uses a 0.5-inch planning margin per face. That is an adjustable shopping allowance, not a manufacturer requirement or a safety standard. If a manual specifies a different clearance, use it.

A 12-inch usable depth minus a half-inch margin at both ends leaves an 11-inch product allowance.
Original arithmetic example, not a tested installation or a scale template.

Four models, one depth constraint

The table uses the manufacturer's published inch values. Required width includes a half-inch allowance at each side. It does not include accessories omitted from a maker's dimensions.

Model / configurationPublished W × D × H, inchesResult and minimum width
OXO Good Grips Dish Rack*13.75 × 10.5 × 3.5Provisional depth match: needs 11.5 depth and 14.75 width.

OXO Foldaway / open*19.4 × 15.5 × 5.125Too deep in either flat orientation.
Joseph Joseph Extend Steel / closed14 × 12.25 × 6.5Too deep in either flat orientation.

*Axis uncertainty: OXO supplies a sequence of dimensions without explicitly labeling width, depth and height. The table follows the existing catalogue's provisional ordering; verify the axes before ordering. The OXO Foldaway's folded size is storage information, not its drying footprint.

Rotation changes more than the rectangle

Turning the closed Extend Slim puts its 9-inch side along the counter's depth. With the two half-inch margins, that uses 10 inches. Its 12.2-inch side then occupies 13.2 inches of counter width including margins. The same calculation for the fully extended rack needs 21.5 inches of width. These are calculated envelopes, not proof that the drain reaches your sink.

Mark the outline with removable tape that is safe for your surface, then mark the spout's required position separately. Check that the rack's supporting feet remain on a stable surface. Do not balance a rack over a counter edge to make the numbers work.

What a shortlist cannot tell you

  • Whether your plates clear the upper cabinet when you lift them out.
  • Whether the spout passes over the sink rim and drains as intended.
  • Whether cups, handles or a utensil holder extend beyond the listed body.
  • Whether the rack has enough drying capacity for your normal dishes.

If neither candidate works, consider changing the drying location or exploring a supported over-sink design. A roll-up rack must span the sink with the support and load conditions specified by its maker; this counter-footprint calculation cannot check that.
