INDEPENDENT KITCHEN GUIDES · MEASURE FIRST. CHOOSE BETTER.
How we chose these: a range of fixed, narrow, expandable, and foldaway designs with published measurements from the brand. The numbers below are manufacturer-stated dimensions, not our firsthand measurements. These are not ranked “best” products. Maker links are ordinary source links—not affiliate or paid links.
01 / BASIC TRAY
OXO Good Grips Dish Rack
Simple, low-profile countertop option for a small number of plates and utensils. It takes less of your worktop than many full-size metal frames.
Published dimensions13.75″ × 10.5″ × 3.5″
The maker provides these three dimensions without axis labels. For our calculator, we provisionally treat them as width × depth × height; confirm orientation against the product illustration before ordering. Corners are intended for pouring off collected water.
02 / NARROW EXPANDABLE
Joseph Joseph Extend Slim Steel
Only 9 inches wide when oriented as the maker specifies, with a tray that expands in depth for extra dishes. Useful if your available counter is narrow but deep enough.
Closed · W × D × H9″ × 12.2″ × 6.3″
Expanded · W × D × H9″ × 20.5″ × 6.3″
Expansion increases depth considerably, so a fit while closed does not guarantee room for the fully extended tray or for its drainage path.

03 / FOLDAWAY STORAGE
OXO Good Grips Foldaway
A larger drying area with a fold-down rack and cup holders, but a wide footprint. Better for spaces where the rack can sit out while drying and fold away for storage.
Open · maker order19.4″ × 15.5″ × 5.125″
Closed · maker order19.4″ × 12.5″ × 3.875″
The open measurements are more relevant while dishes dry. The folded dimensions are mainly useful for storage, not for estimating capacity during use.

04 / FULLER-SIZE EXPANDABLE
Joseph Joseph Extend Steel
A wider, expanding steel-frame design with adjustable drainage, better suited to people who need a flexible drying area than to the very smallest countertops.
Closed · W × D × H14″ × 12.25″ × 6.5″
Expanded · W × D × H14″ × 20.25″ × 6.5″
The maker lists rounded inch equivalents of centimeter dimensions. Double-check sink access and where the movable drainage spout can empty.

05 / COMPACT FRAME, FULL FOOTPRINTsimplehuman Compact Steel Frame Dishrack
A fixed frame with a swivel drain spout. The maker's diagram shows a smaller 12-inch inner extent as well as the 15-inch overall extent; use the full footprint for counter planning.
Overall top-view extent × height15.5″ × 15″ × 7.5″
Source: maker dimension drawing for the brushed compact model, SKU KT1184DC, checked October 8, 2026. We map the diagram's horizontal span to calculator width and the full vertical top-view span to depth. Empty-frame height does not include your dishes. Confirm the spout path and exact current variant before ordering.
Which design should you start with?
Very narrow countertop: check the Joseph Joseph Slim’s 9″ width, then confirm whether you have room for its depth and how its spout reaches the sink.
Straightforward tray drying: a basic OXO tray may make sense if it accommodates your actual dishes.
Want to store the rack away: the OXO Foldaway changes shape between use and storage, but its width stays substantial.
Wash more items regularly: a larger expandable model may be more useful if you have room to extend it.
How to measure without disappointment
- Measure the usable countertop, not the entire counter, including the sink lip.
- Note which way the rack’s drainage spout points.
- For expandable racks, check both closed and fully open dimensions.
- Allow room for plates rising above the rack, and for cupboard doors above it.
- Check the maker’s measurements immediately before ordering; product variants can change.
What our calculator checks: rectangular outside dimensions and your chosen extra clearance. It also checks a 90° countertop rotation, but cannot verify sink drainage, structural support, overhang, folding mechanisms or real dish capacity.
Two useful comparison checks
Extend Slim versus Extend Steel: the Slim's stated closed width is 9 inches versus 14 inches for the Steel. Their closed depths are almost the same (12.2 versus 12.25 inches), while fully extended depths are 20.5 and 20.25 inches. A narrow width does not automatically mean a shallower rack. These are manufacturer inch values, with rounding; no capacity or drying-speed ranking is implied.
simplehuman on an 18 × 14-inch counter: its 15.5 × 15-inch full footprint fails the 14-inch depth in either flat orientation, even before a margin. The 12-inch internal span in the maker diagram is not a substitute for the overall size.
Missing evidence stays visible: OXO axis labels remain provisional. A separately researched Umbra Sinkin listing contains inconsistent dimensions, so that model is not included in the automatic matcher. None of these products has a loaded plate height measured by us.
